Good Things Happening in the World

In rural Ethiopia, the most highly prized “possession” that anyone can have is an education. Children will walk miles to attend school even if it means squeezing into a small classroom with 120 others just as eager to learn. The Ilay School in Gambella provides a great example of just how important an education is to these children. In 2001, the school’s eight aging mud-block classrooms were literally falling down around the students’ ears and yet it was forced to turn away hundreds of children who wanted to enroll. In spite of its condition, the school already had more than 900 students.

Gambella is the capital of Gambella Region and it has a rapidly growing population so the school’s administrators knew the situation was only going to get worse. They approached the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation Fund (ESRDF) asking the organization to add an expansion project for the school to the list of proposals it would present to A Glimmer of Hope for 2002. They did and the project was approved. In 2002, two new brick classroom blocks were constructed allowing the Ilay School to increase it’s enrollment to more than 1,120 students; typically, there are four classrooms to each block. In 2005, Gambella’s steadily increasing population demanded that the school be added to again and three additional classroom blocks were constructed giving hundreds more children a chance to go to school.

According to Principal Diriba Wodago, the school has had quite an impact on the local children. “This project has reduced our shortage of classroom space tremendously,” he said. “It has also made a significant difference in the lives of those children who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to get an education.” The total cost of the Ilay School Expansion Project was $125,000. Community participation in the project was substantial with much of the labor being provided on a volunteer basis by locals.

LIFE IS GRAND
-No Bashing Allowed. This Is Here Because It’s Just Plain Funny-

I say: "kissing", Yes, kissing is the greatest sport on earth. I’ll explain just a few of the reasons. Kissing is the most versatile sport around. There are so many types of kisses to choose from – at least one for just about any occasion.
There is the quick peck on the cheek kiss, the peck on each cheek kiss, the peck on your nephew's cheek kiss while grabbing the other cheek with your hand, the wildly passionate kiss, the elegant kiss on the hand, the dreaded kiss of death, the "Hey you! Kiss this!". -Kissing is easy to transport. Kissing requires so little equipment. Kissing always livens things up.
Try it. See how it livens things up? Kissing is legal in all 50 states. Kissing is 100% biodegradable. Kissing is safe to do in a moving vehicle, as long as you are not driving. Kissing is non toxic. Kissing is non-fattening. Kissing is organic, low in sodium, preservative-free, low in saturated fats and does not contain dozens of delicious ingredients that cannot be pronounced. Most kisses are not tested on animals. You can kiss just about everyone.

RIGHT ON THE MONEY

Perhaps you noticed that United States dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and silver dollars have ridges, or grooves, around their edges. They were not put there for decoration, but had a very important purpose at one time in history. During our country's earlier years, all coins were made of gold or silver, and did not have ridges. Each coin's value was based on the amount of gold or silver in it. For example, a $10 gold piece contained ten dollars worth of gold, and silver dimes contained ten cents worth of silver. But some dishonest people sought to make an illegal profit from these coins. They filed off the edges and sold them for their value in gold or silver. The smaller-sized coin often went unnoticed, but this dishonest practice decreased the value of the original gold or silver coin. To prevent this, the government began milling, or grooving, the edges so a coin could easily be identified if it was trimmed. Coins today are no longer made of pure gold or silver, but the milled edges remain because people are accustomed to seeing them that way. At the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, one single stamping machine can produce 10,000 coins every minute of every hour of every day of the week!

Mathew 11:20-24
Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.’ For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."

LIFE IS GOOD!

Santa Ana, CA -- Scott Glabb walked into the Athletic Director's office at Santa Ana High School and immediately got the job as head wrestling coach-- but, of course, the competition was lean. Not a single other person had applied for the job at the school, which was known for students to be in gangs and dealing drugs. Coming from a school of upper-middle class students, Glabb was unsure of how disciplined the wrestlers at Santa Ana would be -- he soon found out that the commitment level he was used to from athletes was not the norm at Santa Ana High School. The first season, Glabb dealt with wrestlers not being eligible to compete because of grades, and students in gangs and on drugs. His team of 20 wrestlers had a losing season of 11 wins and 16 losses -- once even getting beat by a score of 72 to zero. Glabb figured he would never have the winning wrestling team he dreamed of at Santa Ana, so he decided to stop focusing on winning and start investing more time in these kids -- and that is when things started to change. Glabb began to focus on the relationships he had with his wrestlers and started hanging out with them outside of practice -- taking them to movies and theme parks and learning more about their lives and cultures. The next season the team was 26-3 and the team that had previously beat them by 72 points, only beat them by 6. Because many of these boys did not have father figures and had to grow up too fast because of their family life situations, Glabb became the role model they needed to break their negative cycles. He believed in them when no one else would, and took the time to get to know them. Since Scott started focusing on his wrestlers rather than winning, there have been major changes among his team -- wrestlers are no longer skipping practices, and the training has become much more serious because everyone's attitude is better. Scott too has benefited from working with the Santa Ana wrestlers because he says it has given him a purpose and hope. Since Scott started coaching in 1991, the Santa Ana High School wrestling team has had a record of 294 wins and 53 losses, 48 state qualifiers, and two high school national champion wrestlers.

we ought to know a little about everything.

Having a Bad Day?
Fire authorities in California found a corpse in a burned out section of forest while assessing the damage done by a forest fire. The deceased male was dressed in a full wet suit, complete with scuba tanks on his back, flippers, and face mask. A post-mortem revealed that the person died not from burns, but from massive internal injuries. Dental records provided a positive identification. Investigators set about to determine how a fully clad diver ended up in the middle of a forest fire. It was revealed that on the day of the fire, the person went for a diving trip off the coast some 20 miles from the forest. The fire-fighters, seeking to control the fire as quickly as possible, called in a fleet of helicopters with very large dip buckets. Water was dipped from the ocean and then flown to the forest fire and emptied. You guessed it. One minute our diver was making like Flipper in the Pacific, the next he was doing the breast stroke in a fire dip bucket 300 feet in the air. Apparently he extinguished exactly 5'10" of the fire. Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

FREAKY, FUN, TERRIBLE & WEIRD FACTS!
-We Cannot Make Any Claims As To The Validity Of Any Of This Information. But What The Heck, It’s Funny And Sometimes Disgusting-

The running of the bulls, el encierro in Spanish, is a practice that involves running in front of bulls that have been let loose on a course of a sectioned-off subset of a town's streets. The most famous running of the bulls is that of the nine-day festival of San Fermín in Pamplona, although they are held in towns and villages across Spain during the fiesta season, usually in the run-up to the corrida, or bullfight. Unlike bullfights, which are performed by professionals, anyone may participate in an encierro. The origin of this custom is the transport of the bulls from the off-site corrals where they had spent the night to the bullring where they would be killed in the evening. Youngsters would jump among them to show off their bravado.

IT’S A CRAZY GOOD & AMAZING WORLD!

The platypus is classified as a mammal because it produces milk and is covered in coat of thick fur. Lacking teats, the female nurses pups through the skin covering its abdomen. But there are reptile-like attributes too: females lay eggs, and males can stab aggressors with a snake-like venom that flows from a spur tucked under its hind feet. The bird-like qualities include webbed feet and a flat bill similar to a duck's. With their eyes, ears and nostrils closed, platypuses rely on sensitive electrosensory receptors tucked inside their bills to track prey underwater, detecting electrical fields generated by muscular contraction.

In captivity, platypuses have lived up to 17 years of age. In the wild, they feed on worms, insect larvae, shrimps and crayfish, eating up to 20 percent of their body weight every day. Males grow to a length of 50 centimeters (20 inches) and weigh about two kilos (4.5 pounds), with females about 20 percent shorter and lighter.
