The First Defenestration of Prague involved the killing of seven members of the city council by a crowd of radical Czech Hussites on July 30, 1419. Jan Želivský, a Hussite priest at the church of the Virgin Mary of the Snows, led his congregation on a procession through the streets of Prague to the Town Hall - Novoměstská radnice - on Charles Square. The town council members had refused to exchange their Hussite prisoners. While they were marching a stone was thrown at Želivský from the window of the town hall. The mob became enraged at this event and led by Jan Žižka stormed the town hall. Once inside the hall the group threw the judge, the burgomaster, and several members of the town council out of the window and into the street, where they were killed by the fall.

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer: "Look, I'll give you $100 if you'll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I'm supposed to promise to 'love, honor and obey' and 'be faithful to her forever,' I'd appreciate it if you'd just leave that out." He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied. On the day of the wedding, when it came time for the groom's vows, the pastor looked the young man in the eye and said: "Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?" The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes," then leaned toward the pastor and hissed: "I thought we had a deal." The pastor put a $100 bill into the groom's hand and whispered: "She made me a better offer."

Good Things Happening in the World
"Adopt A Hummingbird" program takes off!

In 2006, SABO volunteer Susan Ostrander launched a new "Adopt A Hummingbird" program to support our research and help the banding station visitors and other members of the public connect on a deeper level with the birds we study. Hummingbirds banded as a part of SABO's research projects are now available for "adoption" by individuals, families, school classes, scout troops, etc. Each adoption includes: a colorful certificate with the bird's species, band number, and location where it bird was banded, the sponsor's name, and a name the sponsor chooses for the bird a "biography" summarizing the bird's known history up to the date of the adoption a year's membership in SABO, including discounts on activities and subscription to our electronic newsletter (optional). Sponsors who are present when the bird is captured are allowed to release the bird. Whenever an adopted bird is recaptured, its sponsor receives an update on its current status by e-mail or postcard. Adoptions begin at $25 for common species; limited numbers of rarer species are also available for a higher fee. For more information on adopting a hummingbird for yourself or as a gift, contact adoption coordinator Susan Ostrander at adoptions@sabo.org.

Ali’s Boundless Playground in Sertoma Park
ALI KARPENKO

It’s Ali Karpenko’s dream to have a community playground that is accessible to children with disabilities. With the support of her friends, family and various community organizations, she is working to raise $200,000 for a new Boundless Playground to be constructed in Grand Forks, ND in 2008. Ali, age 13, was born with Spina Bifida. “I am very blessed, as I have a very mild case of it. Many of the problems I face are hidden to most, as I am very physically able. I did not begin the playground project for myself. I’m doing it for the kids like me who have a disability, but aren’t as lucky as I am.”
Boundless Playgrounds are tailor-made for the way children are naturally drawn to play. They are universally accessible so everyone can play side by side at his or her own highest level of ability.
The Grand Forks Park District has donated land in Sertoma Park and will assist in the construction and on-going maintenance of the playground. Two local organizations, Grand Forks Sertoma Club and The Arc, Upper Valley have teamed up to assist Ali in her marketing and fundraising efforts which will include soliciting donations from local residents and businesses. The project also has the support of Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown.
“I think every kid should be able to have fun and feel like they belong,” says Ali.
“It would be nice to have a place where kids with disabilities and their siblings could have fun together.”
The Otto Bremer Foundation has awarded Ali’s Boundless Playground in Sertoma Park a matching grant of $20,000.
We must raise $20,000 independently in order to “match” their pledge.
All donations received after May 22, 2008 will count toward the matching grant.

BEIJING – Chinese sports stars have opened their wallets to help earthquake victims in their country with Houston Rockets star Yao Ming pledging 2 million yuan ($286,100).
'I plan to do whatever I can,' Yao said in a joint statement with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, who pledged to help in any way possible. 'I hope that many others around the world will join us.'
High hurdles world record holder Liu Xiang donated 500,000 yuan. A further 500 athletes and officials involved with the August Games made their own donations, including 5 million yuan from China's General Administration of Sports itself. 'I would like to dedicate my all achievement at the Olympics to the people hurt in the earthquake,' said Liu, one of China's best hopes of winning a gold at the Aug. 8-24 Games.
Chengdu Blades, the Chinese Super League (CSL) soccer club from the quake-stricken Sichuan capital, sent their reserves to donate blood and the team will wear black arm bands at matches. The league announced it would give all revenue from the eighth round of matches, delayed until this weekend, as charity relief. China's sports lottery organizations made a contribution of near 100 million yuan, including HK$20 million ($2.6 million) from the Hong Kong Equestrian Committee. Olympics organizers arranged one minute's silence at the start of each day of the Olympic torch relay across the country and scaled down celebrations.

On Account of Kindness by Jacqueline Freeman

In the mid-80's, I owned a holistic health center. A woman on my staff and I would talk about how elders seem to become more invisible to society as they age. So, we decided we would volunteer at the elderly center and do something to honor them.
Every Friday morning we went there and spent a few hours massaging shoulders and giving foot rubs to anyone who looked like they could use one. As we did that, we talked with them, asking them questions and appreciating the wisdom they shared with us.
Years later I had saved up a little sum toward a home of my own. One of my clients, who owned a real estate company, told me about some acreage that was about to go on the market. She suggested I look at it and if I liked it, that I make an offer through one of her agents. The property was just what I was looking for. I asked the agent to write an offer on it, but to write it for a lesser amount than was being asked. Even scrimping, I knew I could only come up with half the asking price. The agent told me it was rude to put in such a low offer and it would never be accepted. I told her this wasn't a negotiation tactic, it was all I could afford. She presented the offer and the next day it was accepted. The agent was amazed since the land clearly was worth the asking price. Some weeks later I learned why that happened.
The woman who read my offer was selling the land for her mother. Her mother had been one of the elderly women whose feet, on many occasions, I'd rubbed three years earlier. The mother had told her daughter many times how much she appreciated my doing that and how much better she felt afterwards. When my offer came in, as acknowledgement for those free foot rubs years earlier, they sold me the land for the price I could afford.
That still is, to me, a miracle. I had no idea way back then that these little acts of kindness would come back years later and end up saving me a small fortune in return.
Jacqueline Freeman lives in the very small town of Venersborg in Washington state. She teaches people how to start and run businesses that are based on love and kindness. She also shows them how to use their businesses to make a difference in the world. In the past 3 years she has helped 1,000 small business owners personally donate $2.5 million, over 200,000 volunteer hours, and enough blood to save 7,300 lives. Good Things Happening In The World

Since 1989, Women's Bean Project has been dedicated to helping women break the cycle of poverty and unemployment.
Our Mission: "To teach, through employment in on-site businesses, workplace competencies for entry-level positions to women who come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment or poverty." Our Vision: Women’s Bean Project strives to break the cycle of chronic unemployment and poverty by helping women discover their talents and develop skills by offering job readiness training opportunities. With this stepping stone toward success, the women will be able to support themselves and their families, and create stronger role models for future generations.
Our History Jossy Eyre founded the Women's Bean Project in 1989 as a result of her volunteer work at a day shelter for homeless women. Eyre saw that while the shelter kept women safe, if could not help them make lasting changes in their lives. Eyre bought $500 worth of beans and put two homeless women to work - the first step in building the social enterprise we are today.
In 1993, King Soopers became the first grocery store to carry our products. Today our product offerings have expanded to salsa mixes, spice rubs, coffee beans, and jelly beans in addition to our soups and chili, along with gift baskets, baking mixes and much more.
Whom We Serve The women hired at the Bean Project have histories of poverty and unemployment; they lack hope and self-confidence; most do not have a GED or high school diploma; most are single mothers and have been on public assistance; many are recovering from experiences with substance abuse and incarceration.
What We Do The Women's Bean Project is a social enterprise that offers a transitional job in gourmet food manufacturing designed to provide immediate income, arrange support services to overcome barriers to employment, and teach the job readiness skills needed to get and keep a job. Program participants come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment and poverty, and the program helps them develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently in the workplace and community. But the Women's Bean Project does not hire women to make and sell bean products. We make and sell bean products to hire women. Women produce the goods that are sold nationwide as they develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently and effectively in the workplace and community.
The Women's Bean Project:
Meets basic needs and removes barriers to employment by paying a wage and facilitating support services
Offers life skills that enhance a woman's ability to govern her own life Arranges services that increase employability such as GED and computer classes
Provide hands-on training in the fundamental job readiness skills required by entry-level employers. Why We Do It
The tools gained during their stay at the Bean Project empower women to create better lives for themselves, provide their families with hope, and contribute to a stronger community.

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."
But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don't know where they laid him."
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and what he told her.

LIFE IS GOOD!

I used my ATM card at the self-service pump. Normally I put my card in my pocket while I pump the gas, but the pants I was wearing didn't have pockets. I put the ATM card on the trunk, thinking, "that's a really dumb thing to do."
I went about my day. I might have made another stop before heading back to the office. I'm not sure. Anyway, after several exercises in procrastination, I was finally actually filling the blank screen with words. I had finally stopped procrastinating when the phone rang. "Where is your ATM card?" my husband asked. I wasn't sure what he was getting at. As I reached for my purse to look for it, he said, "You don't have it. It's at the Elmwood Wells Fargo." As he was telling me who had called from the bank, I had that terrible feeling that accompanies the realization you have lost your wallet, purse or bank card. I called the automatic bank service to check if anyone had used my card. While you can't use a card to withdraw money from an ATM machine without knowing the secret code, you can use it to make purchases at stores and restaurants. There were no charges I didn't recognize. So where did I leave my card, I was wondering? Where did I use it last? As I grabbed my coat and headed over to the Elmwood Wells Fargo, I saw my hand putting the card on the trunk of my car, and heard myself thinking, "that's a really dumb thing to do." I drove to the bank, almost four and a half miles from the gas station on Mandana Boulevard.
After a couple of minutes, I found the employee who had called and had my card. "A guy just came in and said he found it on the street," he said. "Did he say where he found it?" "Nope. Just said he found it on the street." We both commented on how nice it was of him. And how lucky I was a person like that found it. Reviewing my account, the bank employee advised me to make a change to save fees and I went on my way. I kept wondering how the card had gotten from Mandana in Oakland to College in Berkeley. Whatever it's particular route, how it got there is still a mystery. And the man who turned it in remains anonymous.
If you happen to be a guy who found an ATM card and took it to the Wells Fargo on College Avenue, I want to say thanks. Thanks for your honesty. Thanks for going out of your way. Thanks for an act that reaffirms our faith in humanity. And next time I think, "that's a really dumb thing to do," maybe I won't do it. Duh.

The invention of the flush toilet is widely attributed to London plumber Thomas Crapper, who patented a U-bend siphoning system for flushing the pan in the late 19th century.

The flower with the world's largest bloom is the Rafflesia arnoldii. This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds! It is a parasitic plant, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It attaches itself to a host plant to obtain water and nutrients. When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant.

Burnt Popcorn Smell in the Microwave

To get rid of this awful lingering stink, fill as large microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and sprinkle your favorite spice like cinnamon or add several drops of vanilla or lemon extract. Bring to a boil. You must let it sit inside for 10 to 15 minutes to cool down. Simply wipe the walls down with paper towels. Leave the door open to further air it out.
